Implementing IP Telephony requires setting realistic expectations in terms of cost, network changes and time. If your organization is considering IP Telephony, you should first evaluate the current state of your network infrastructure by determining the best software and hardware to support business needs and strategic vision. Next, you should prioritize your criteria considering qualities such as flexibility, interoperability, scalability, and performance.
The consensus from IT managers with converged networks is that IP Telephony should not be implemented without first assessing the underlying data network. They emphasize this because voice calls have unique performance requirements that differ fundamentally from most other types of traffic on a packet network.
NEC provides two levels of IP Telephony Assessment to determine whether your network is ready for IP Telephony:
- IP RediCheck Assessment – a simple “pass-fail” test that determines your network’s ability to support IP Telephony.
- IP Telephony Assessment – in addition to the a “pass-fail” test, evaluates the state of existing network infrastructure and provides expert recommendations on any upgrades or changes needed to support IP Telephony.
